I argue that this is a security risk. An unknowing user who upgrades to Stretch would be happy that his php code continues to run... but he suddenly is running on unsupported software. And any future security updates to php will be silently ignored by his system. By upgrading to Stretch he

Hi Kienan, automatic upgrade from php5 to php7.0 is not a very good idea as there were many backwards incompatible changes. The missing "automatic" upgrade path is deliberate (together with fact that php5 continues to be usable). I will provide some text to the release notes. Cheers, --
