That firmware-ath9k-htc isn't installed by default seems to be confusing downstream users, particularly on derivatives that are designed to be free software only and FSF-endorsed. Trisquel explicitly makes an effort to include it [1], but PureOS does not (yet) [2], and their docs seem to reflect an understanding that all general-purpose free firmware is installed by firmware- linux-free [3].
I'm notifying the distros and hardware vendors one by one of the situation, but it would be more worthwhile if my change could be merged in Debian.
