Just for the record, and to help anyone who may have the problem,
hopefully this will be referenced in search engines. This happened to me
as well. I had in my folder:
~/.thunderbird/-hash-.default/Mail/Local Folders/Éléments envoyés
"Éléments envoyés" in French matches the sent folder. I didn't care
about it, so I just renamed the folder, and thunderbird just worked.
The folders and files like this were encoded with some weirdo encoding,
and even ls or mc wouldn't display it correctly.
