If the user hadn't touched the keyboard, a normal boot would instead proceed, whereupon the user would just end up on a black screen. They might say 'I tried Debian. Black screen! Not even "BSOD" with a few words on it. Forget it!' "One can't just hack X Windows to do that" you might say... Well please do something.
