I use unstable and this is no longer an issue in samba 2:4.17.2+dfsg-3.

Here's the thing: if you replace /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb with a shell
script that simply calls smbspool:
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/smbspool "$@"
it works. I wanted to debug if DEVICE_URI was set correctly, and it is.

I did a git bisect on salsa repo and found this to be an upstream bug.
