I ran into the same bug, closing LXQT's qlipper app solved it for me.
Since filing the report I have found that selecting a big square and
hitting Edit then Copy will cause Gimp to crash
however
selecting a small square and hitting Edit then Copy does not cause a crash

Dear Maintainer,
If I open this image in Gimp

then I use the rectangle select tool to select a box
then I click Edit then Copy then Gimp immediately dies.
