I tried to reproduce this bug with many styles of installs and
upgrades:
-installed woody official version and upgrade to sarge with a modified
smb.conf
-installed unofficial package and upgrade to sarge package
-installed manually with smb.conf in /etc and replace

I'm seeing the same problem on my Sparc Ultra10. Switching to dhcp3-client
solved the issue.
Removal of the package might not be such a good idea as Debian-Installer
uses the dhcp-client-udeb. I've not yet checked if the udeb has the same
problems on sparc.
