Ok, so I decided to
move /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libntfs.conf/libntfs.conf to
/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libntfs.conf
and got GNOME back :)
together with all my other applications...
Thanks for the tip, Gabor!

Package: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686
Version: 2.6.16-12
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system
machine: Toshiba tecra A4
AFAIK all tecras A4 and all satellite m40 models have the same hardware/bios
configuration, so this bug affect them all.
If the module ohci1394 is loaded
-premount/udev
dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.15-1-486 (was this needed?)
without any difference either. Still fails.
I am using Debian GNU/Linux Etch, kernel 2.6.15-1-486 and planning to
upgrade to sid soon.

I find a similar problem with my custom build 2.6.17 kernel. With the
same setup, but using a 2.6.16 kernel, everything works, so it does
seems like the kernel is guilty of this one.
The 'BusType' workaround does seem to work on 2.6.17, but it quite a bit
slower.
Cheers,
Carlos
