I was looking at this bug, and I have found that there are two
problems that trigger this bug: gdLargeFont and gdGiantFont seem to
have been swapped, and gdSmallFont has changed sightly and the sample
png doesn't reflect this.
I'll keep digging on this...

If I did everything right, the binNMU should be in incoming.
It's a true binNMU, no source changes except for the debian/changelog.
I didn't close the bug yet, I don't know if that should be done with the
binNMU or not. After all the bug would resurface again when the buildds

I can confirm that, as maks said, the fixed packages from

I took the sources from mentors, built it localy, installed the

The problem lies in the addition of several lines in
apt/apt-pkg/tagfile.cc that were added for the mmappable package file
case, but in the fix for #376777, were not put inside proper
ifstatements for the non-mmap case, and are actually broken in that
case (corruption every 64kB of package file).

just wanted to confirm the bug is still there. My symptoms are similar. I
can see all accented chars nicely in OOo 2.0.3 or when exported/printed

latest sid kernel won't boot correctly anymore).
I guess tomorrow many users will be pretty frightened to see their box not

tmpfs in /dev, leading to a lot of problems such as alsa not working,
ipw2200 not being able to load its firmware, etc.

I can confirm this bug really exists on standard initrd kernels. I have
this same problem on two different laptops. I run the standard Debian
kernels (which are initrd kernels.)
I have found the following:

if xdm/gdm etc doesn't start... you can go to a root session and:
/etc/init.d/udev
