Also, the strange thing about the kfreebsd install is I wanted a x86_64

After upgrading to Erlang 17 I got "I/O error" in Pidgin trying to
connect. Other clients are unable to connect, too.
And when I downgraded Erlang to 16 from wheezy-backports, problem
dissappears.
Might be that our problems are similiar.
