please find attached the patch for the NMU I've just uploaded to fix the
FTBFS.
The patch is rather large, and I think the best course of action would
probably be to remove this package after the release of stretch. The
applications which are currently using it are presumably better off

Not necessarily. sbuild and pbuilder are only "equivalent" if the chroots
they use have the same package
