The problem is a missing build-dependency on libxi-dev (as can be
seen from config.log). I've attached a patch that fixes this.
The resulting package works just as fine as the previous version
(i.e. it looks absolutely terrible by today's standards).

To conclude, manually fixing up all this stuff seems impossible, and
getting gcc to solve it didn't work for me either.
So unless you have any better ideas we could ask the gcc folks if
they know a solution for this.

Attatched is a patch that fixes the problem. With it the package
builds fine and seems to work.
Unrelated to that the build depends should probably be adjusted to
the x.org packages too.
