hi walter:

add lines on /etc/apt/sources.list , and try to run, apt-get update and then
apt-get install postfix

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main

and tell me if you fix this problem.
