I've determined that this was in fact the fault of fglrx. The xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd driver in Lenny is 1.2.1-2 and my video card was only picked up as of version 1.2.2 and sid currently has 1.2.5 so I obtained the driver from sid and configured the system to use the driver and now it
