Hello guys, I am not sure if someone found the solution to this problem. But it works for me, I am using Debian unstable, and I had the same problem, I tried to reinstall xfig, fonts etc..., but didn't work, so after searching seems that we need to do a "reset" of the font path that is installed in the system, why?, mmm for me I had installed some fonts but they were not recognized, so i did "xset -fp rehash" and works!!!(check xfig README). I hope this solution works for you too.
