The patch stops the crashing for me, but a VPN session doesn't get
established. Maybe problem my end. Or maybe related to a little part
missing, which is on the upstream patch ?

/run/network to no avail.
Checking with ifconfig lo gets created but eth0 is missing (but is mentioned
in ifstate).
So I am open to try any suggestions which might both a) fix this for me and
b) help prevent this happening to others when initscripts gets updated.

Here 1.6.3 was fine.
1:1.7.1 was broken (when i first reported this).
1:1.7.1+1.6.3 was fine.
1:1.7.2 is broken.
