My .xsession-errors has some gnome-shell critical errors in it. Since
the file doesn't timestamp the messages, I don't know if these critical
errors are when gnome-shell froze up or not.

I downgraded all of the nvidia packages to 290 from the snapshots
archive and it helps. The segfault at startup or when receiving new
mail has gone away. There are still 2 issues.

I'm not sure if this shows anything useful but here is a backtrace in
gdb after evolution segfaults. The message at the bottom of the
evolution window when this happens is "Pinging imap server

Evolution started segfaulting on startup. When run from the command
line I get the following:

It started in the last day or to due to Wheezy updates.

Gnome doesn't start for one of the userids on my computer
since the last gnome upgrades in squeeze. Another of the users
on the computer has no problems. On the session that won't start,

One of the logins on my computer started failing after the recent gnome
upgrades that hit squeeze. The following message pops up during gnome login
and gnome fails to start.

I pointed my deb-src to lenny to get the old xserver-xorg-video-mga.
Then I did:
apt-get -b source xserver-xorg-video-mga
and
dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.4.9.dfsg-1_i386.deb
to install what was built. If that is what you mean by build against
the 1.6 server, then it
didn't change anything.
There is no difference when running it as you said. There is no output
to the terminal. I have used abiword before.
I don't remember the last version that worked but it seems like it has
worked in the last month or so.
I don't see any problems in any other gtk+ application. I have two
