This appears to be another manifestation of the incompatibility with python3.12 reported in #1059647. I'm not going to mark it as a duplicate in the BTS since the process of getting there is so different, but I believe the fix will be the same. Upstream has reworked the build process to allow use of python3.12 and a new upstream release is expected as soon as a test suite issue is resolved.
