pcregrep has been ported to pcre2grep which is packaged in pcre2-utils.
You can use that instead.

Nope, even much simpler cases fail to remove just a subs

Thanks for the bug report! So pcregrep hasn't been ported (by
PCRE upstream) to libpcre2 either?
