Package: python2.3
Version: 2.3.5-15
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I installed etch using the daily netinst snapshot and a retarded mirror, and
now i'm syncing with the recent
packages. Python 2.4 refuses to install itself because some python-gnome
librairies complain about pyversions
missing. Maybe it's the gnome python thing that's broken, I don't know. Maybe
the problem is with 2.4 too...

Here is the nasty apt output:

Preparing to replace python 2.3.5-5 (using .../python_2.4.3-11_all.deb) ...
running python pre-rtupdate hooks for python2.4...

dpkg: considering removing python in favour of python-minimal ...
dpkg: no, cannot remove python (--auto-deconfigure will help):

  python is to be removed.
dpkg: regarding .../python-minimal_2.4.3-11_all.deb containing python-minimal:

 /var/cache/apt/archives/python-minimal_2.4.3-11_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I fixed this with a nasty --force:

dpkg --force-all -i /var/cache/apt/archives/python-minimal_2.4.3-11_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/python_2.4.3-11_all.deb

Any idea?

rtupdates scripts are brittle, especially if you do things in the
pre-rtupdate hook, which is called in a preinst (with all the
implications that has).

python-gnome2 does not run anything at pre-rtupdate time anymore, hence
the reported problem is fixed. The underlying problem with rtupdates
beeing really brittle can't be adressed for etch anymore, and as we
don't have a lot of rtupdates in the archive (maybe 5 to 10) we can
monitor them separately for etch.

Cheers,

PS: I'm closing those bugs with the RM blessing.
