I've just recently run into this bug. It seems to be fixable by enabling
USE_TLS=1 so that the init script runs.

disabling dri did nothing, disabling glx however works, at least X
starts up and works sorta correctly (mplayer for instance works, xmoto
segfaults, so it's by no means perfect)
using the -71xx packages installed with module-assistant
