Apparently Gallery is checking files inside the data directory as well to see whether they're both readable and writable just by opening the directory and iterating over the first N entries it sees.
So this means that if you have anything else in the data directory that isn't writable by the webserver, your install breaks. Does Gallery inherently require itself to be able to create arbitrary filenames inside the data directory, or is this futureproofing, or is it arbitrary?
