The problem was that the changelog of dhis-client 5.5 claimed it was compatible
with dhis-server 5.3, and I believed it:
[dhid] 5.5 packets still go out with rport set, making them compatible with
servers of versions 5.3 or lower.
But there was no such change in the source code. I

No, I did not have time to look at it in detail.
Upstream is moving away from the current model and wants to turn DHIS into a
web service. I don't expect any updates to the dhis-server code from their
side.
