I think I've found the problem: compizconfig-backend-gconf 0.8.2-1 has
not yet migrated to testing. Bizarrely, there is no dependency
mentioned, and yet this was the entire problem: upgrading this package
from 0.7.6-1 to 0.8.2-1 solved the problem for me.
So there is a dependency or conflict miss
Me too. Attached are my xorg.conf, the X log, glxinfo. Just upgraded
to compiz 0.8.2-6 and found this problem. The messages that compiz
--replace & gives are:

If you downgrade xserver-xorg-core, you want to downgrade
libgl1-mesa-dri as well.

Also, I reveted my xorg-server from 7.4 to 7.3 now I get a white screen
trying to run compiz.

Please attach the full X log, and output of glxinfo with and without
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1.
