I am also affected by this bug.

I have tried running gsmartcontrol from console, using --no-scan option; this allowed the program to start normally. Next, I added all devices, one by one, trying different methods (ata, scsi, sat,...) I noticed that the problem occurs when I select SCSI, on devices which do not support that method (eg, an ata disk). Selecting the correct method (ata), or even other wrong ones, does not cause the crash. I don't have, now, devices which use the scsi method, so I can't tell you whether SCSI works on SCSI-using devices. Anyway, it appears that the problem lies in the SCSI protocol (which is apparently tested for devices during the auto-scan)

Besides, downgrading this package to stable did not help, so I guess the bug has come out from some upgrade in some different package (no clue which one)?
