I addded a patch to tag all test classes and skip them in schroot environments, and the python nosetests command still hung. I think that for now the tests should be skipped in schroot environments, to fix the build failure on the Debian build daemons and unblock the rebuilds of the mpi4py reverse dependencies. As I mentioned in the Debian bugreport, the tests succeed in cowbuilder chroots, so I chose to only skip the tests in schroot.
