I don't think your suggested patch is going to fix the issue, because
the Debian package already contains a patch to use libm.so.6 instead:

 https://sources.debian.net/src/mpi4py/2.0.0-2/debian/patches/up_libm/

The nosetests simply hang in schroot build environment as used on the
Debian build daemons and porterboxes. I addded a patch to tag all test
classes and skip them in schroot environments, and the python nosetests
command still hung.

I think that for now the tests should be skipped in schroot
environments, to fix the build failure on the Debian build daemons and
unblock the rebuilds of the mpi4py reverse dependencies. As I mentioned
in the Debian bugreport, the tests succeed in cowbuilder chroots, so I
chose to only skip the tests in schroot.
