Dear Maintainer,
I face the same problem on my Debian stretch, after upgrading to Vlc 3. Maybe
the bug title can be adapted, because it doesn't exactly fail to lauch, only it
does not open its window. It doesn't crash either

Dear Maintainer,
I upgraded to VLC3 from Synaptic's Mark All Updates option, the bug started
here.
I ran a complete purge of all VLC packages and reinstall via rebuild from
source.
