Progress. I had the same problem here(TM). Deleting global and local
fontconfig cache did not solve the problem.
After clearing the local fontconfig cache, that cache would be recreated
and it would get an additional amount of cach
Sadly no since I tried half a day... I think in the end removing most packages
starting with fonts- (just enough to not completely remove the system) helped.
Also /etc/fonts/conf.d now consists only out of dejavue - maybe you can get to
that state and it works then (probably also log the removed

I got rid of the problem by removing most of my fonts-* packages,
resetting fontconfig to it's default config from dpkg and recreating the
font-cache. I have no idea which of those did actually fix it; but it
might help someone else…

I hesitated updating due to this bug reported by apt-listbugs, however
today I did and I do not see this issue with Firefox 62.0.3-1 on Plasma
desktop on ThinkPad T520 with Sandybridge Graphics.

I can confirm the CPU-eating problem with firefox.
It might be related to the desktop environment. In my case I use XFCE and
the CPU eating problem goes away if I kill xfsettingsd.
