If the cmap package can be updated it may be possible to remove the maps
from the xpdf-japanese package. Similarly for the other xpdf-* language
packages.

and I've build xpdf since then with that version (2.0.5-2).
It looks like ft_module.h is missing some critical type definitions
to me. I can't see how it ever worked.
Any thoughts?

Can you symlink /tftpboot to /a/dev/sde1 instead? I have that
configuration working fine here (booting a linux PC with etherboot,
on ext2, with the user-space NFS server).
