ask if it would not be appropriate as a Debian package. I
am not a security expert, but OTOH people that want this functionality
will manually patch anyway. My question is, is it appropriate to make it
easier for them by creating a Debian package?

It has implication for libcap* packages too, doesn't it?
I would assume so.

The patch is quite simple [1], and you can grab a patched version at
http://students.cs.byu.edu/~fugalh/x48-041f.tar.gz
1. search for x48 patch fugal on google groups.

be slightly confused by the mutt way of doing
things but that doesn't mean we have to patch mutt for their sakes.
Naturally, it's up to the package maintainer how to differ from
upstream, but this mutt user would be miffed.

-transport-agent is wrong,
the recommendation is fine.
Mutt can read mail without an MTA, but cannot send mail without one.
Whether sending mail is considered simply common use or is a core
functionality has been and certainly will be nit-picked. Your argument
rests on the former.

and my replies were not addressed to the list. I agree completely and
the package will have a different short description as well as a better
long description.
Thank You
