I just commited a simpler patch to CVS HEAD to implement this. This also
moves us to autoconf 2.5x which seems to warrant a few more changes to
shut up some warnings it produces now.

I'll redo it and also fix some other warts (like patching the aclocal.m4
file which is generated by aclocal).

I've worked out the attached patch for large file support in md5sum as
supplied with dpkg, blatantly borrowed from the configure code in the
textutils package which has a working md5sum. This should also help
with LFS for the rest of dpkg - as a start, make sure that conf
