it turns out the bug is in libstdc++5-3.3-dev. /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/3.3.4/libstdc++.so incorrectly points to ../../../i386-linux/libstdc++.so.5 instead of ../../../libstdc++.so.5
