error doesn't offer anything as to what it's failing on. I tried to
move locale.gen out of the way, but it doesn't make a difference.

It's a possibility that the pthread fix in glibc 2.3.2-6 has sorted out
these syslog() bugs too, which both appear to be SMP/threading issues.
Could you please retest with that version?
