Dear Henry, well done, when the penguin is appearing, everything should be alright :-) So, the next thing to do is to check the resolution and depth setting in the XF86Config-4 look for a statement like "Default Depth" or "Depth" accompanied by a Resolution description "1024x768" it should say:

Hi Henry, I had the same problem with my 712/100 a few weeks ago. Look in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 for a line like "DefaultColorDepth" and make sure it is "8". According to a post to my question about this problem, most HP graphics cards on work in 8bpp right now. Thank you and have a nice day. Ja
