I can't help you with X, but I can with the console. The old debian package has
a bug

Yes, screen is fine solution, I use them for terminal emulation, because
console terminal is buggy. But its more convinient to switch alt-f? between
consoles, than ctrl-a,d and screen -r :)
Marcus' console is far better than GNU Screen!

For OSKIT-Mach you don't have to crosscompile. You can simply compile it on
GNU/Linux :).
