Initial Comment:
The last version of file fails to build because it uses MAXPATHLEN in a file 
that doesn't #define it to 1024 like it does in the other files.

However instead of adding the #define and workarounding the issue, I've tried 
to fix it properly.

Here's a patch to use dynamic allocation. Please review!

Message:
getline() is a GNU extension, upstream will probably not happy to
depend on it. Apart from that the patch seems ok.
