It's not our call, but debian-release's.
Haven't like 90% of packages been compiled for it already?
Please see
So until the things on the TODO list are fulfilled, there won't be a
release?

Correct. We need more people helping and with systemd on the horizon, it
seems that we will never make it, unfortunately.

Well, I don't think you guys need systemd to become an official port.
SysVinit works just fine, and dmd looks promising. Systemd is much too hard
to port to anything but Linux. And it is not on the todo list. I think you
guys could be able to port an extra 5%. It's just basic stuff now.
On Sun,
I did like to help HUrd project more then I do now.
I am studying Tanembaum Minix for a better understand of a real OS.
After that I will be able for help Hurd project.

That represents roughly ~500 packages to patch. Not impossible of
course, but still quite some work.

You should probably help out more upstream. They need way more help than
you would imagine. Start

You guys have managed to port 80% of the packages. Another 5% won't take long.
It's not so simple. We got to 80% because there were a few packages
blocking a lot of others, so porting one package was making a lot of
packages go fine. Now
Well, I am a pessimist anyway. I wish I had the time to help. I honestly
believe that true GNU is the way forward.

Is there any way I could help at all? I'm not a programmer, and my hardware

That's why they're building Guix. The package manager for the GNU system.
And dmd. The HURD bootstrap to Guix is in progress.

You can always install GNU/Hurd in a qemu image to play with if your
computer has hardware support, see e.g.
