Thanks for the hint. With that and some more trial and error I got it
working. Had to create home directories by hand tho. Has some very
useful features.
If I can find the time will suggest some additions to the
documentation.

Please check if /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/PureDB exists and contains
"/etc/pure-ftpd/pureftpd.pdb".
Instead of man page you could read /usr/sbin/pure-ftpd-wrapper directly.
It's perl and quite unterstandable (Even if you are not a perl camel).
