Yes, it can work. Can you post an excerpt from the shell where you try
to execute netbeans, along with an 'ls -l' on the executable?

For everyone's info who's encountered this problem:
This only occurred for me when j2sdk1.3 was installed. Installing only
j2re1.3 seemed to work fine.
I installed libstdc++-2.10 (ver. 2.95.2-14) from oldlibs, and that
seemed to fix things when j2sdk1.3 was installed.

Actually I ended up grabbing modjk2 from the Apache site and dropping
that straight into the modules directory. That worked fine...
