but kmail did not send the comfirm back. I have kmail configured to
automatically do this. What else do I need to look for?

what the heck is /bin/start-stop-daemon?
on debian systems its /sbin/start-stop-daemon. you must have some bogus
file in /bin, etc.

/etc/init.d
