I was able to create an activity by:
Clicked on activity Manager.
Clicked create activity.
Clicked Empty Desktop.
Looked at empty desktop

that is exactly, what I do, except that the "Looked at empty desktop" does not
happen.
Here are the .xsession-errors which showed up during this process...quite a
number of them, but I do not really understand what they mean.

So some guesses of what to try :
Under system settings. configure desktop effects, advanced, could you try some
different compositing type / qt graphics system settings? Mine is set to
Compositing Typ
