At the moment, there seems to be an upstream bug which means that the google
groupware resource fails to get past syncing of contacts and hence does not
download calendar events. The calendar component of kontact therefore remains
blank.
Disabling contact syncing seems to be a workaround but

In fact, a system reboot and logging on temporarily as an alternative user
appears to have resolved the problems I outlined.
I suppose it suggests kded just died sometime; possibly an installation script
which did not work exactly as planned?
