I don't see it that way at all. Chris has 1,001 reasons why there's no
packages available, while all around others are accomplishing it.

I had the same thing. I ended up looking in /etc/X11 and seeing an
XftConfig and XftConfig-dpkg-old (something like that). I swapped them
and restarted X.
