Maybe start here:
http://tuxmobil.org/touchpad_driver.html
But this probably not a KDE-Debian related problem and therefore
probably
-tlr2_h.320.mov
Maybe the file is corrupt?
If not, how can it be downloaded? Konqueror isn't able to.

Mplayer and all required codecs, certainly some unfree ones. It plays
almost everything as far as I can see and although no DVD-Nav like Xine,
has a super OSD which even allows switching languages and subtitles
while the videos are playing.

I had this problem too. Nothing I could do could fix it. I then solved

getting Debian to do this: there was no real consensus what is exactly
needed and what isn't: there seem to be several competing systems and no
agreement on this list which is best.

queries but no solutions. I expect if we wait a bit the problems will
eventually be solved by a an update. My solution for the meantime is to
use an old version of Knoppix with 2.4 kernel to write CDs, where it

hal seems to depend on udev, but I still havn't got a clue what all
these components *really* do.

For the above to work properly, you may need a kernel newer than 2.6.11
If you can install udev and hal, the above may work automatically, not
requiring pmount.
