I had this kind of issue. I don't know the reason why, but the guilty packages
were packages related to chipcard.
As I don't have any chipcard reader or whatever devices related to chipcards,
I simply removed all these packages and my issue was solved.
FYI, package name were:
chipcard-tool

I just have installed fam package, started it, run KDE - hangs again on
"Initializing services" (blinking HDD icon). After long waiting the
splash screen simply disappears and I can see empty screen w/ login

Now it is *.10 but the problem remains still.
It is weird to notice but all KDE applications are slow to start when
are run from WM.

blinking HDD.
I use therefore WM for now, but when I run KDE apps. I see long hanging
before I actually see the apps. itself: kate (this one complains on
mime/types), korhanizer, k3b, terminal-emu...
