Thats what I initially thought as well, all I can say is that it the
error messages related to it have gone away for me. Of course, the
errors I could be seeing could also have been due to the second run once
the real root was up.

I believe that all these problems have been sorted out in 2.6.14-2 kernel
packages, uploaded to sid recently. Please try them and post new
information to the bug if the problem persists. Otherwise I'll close this

You're right though- my laptop is a Dell D600 latitude, with a 1.6 GHz
Centrino chipset. One thing I did notice is that it's using the
"generic" ide chipset module, rather than one for my laptop. I will
