This problem turned out to be a hardware fault/BIOS bug anyway. The Athlon 64 x2 939 devices can't support 4 DIMMs at 400MHz, only up to 2 (or 3). 4 devices needs to be slowed down to 333MHz. I expect this is due to excessive capacitance inside the chip. The BIOS is supposed to be aware of these
