What I did:
1) apt-get source linux-2.6.26-1
2) apply some simple patch to USB host code
3) cp /boot/config-2.6.26-1-ixp4xx .config (in kernel source root)
4) make-kpkg --initrd linux-kernel
5) install the package

Probably the issue is not caused by the USB driver but the FAT32 subsystem; I
