If it helps, I am using now linux-image-3.5-trunk-amd64
(3.5.2-1~experimental.1) kernel with no freezes since the change.

the initramfs-tools 0.109 release addresses #689336 to provide a
check for loadkeys/setupcon and inform the user if KEYMAP=y is set
(as done by crypsetup, see #689722) but one of the tools is missing.
