In the 2.6.39-rc* series of kernels, CONFIG_EEEPC_WMI seems to have gone
away. This module is needed to support hotkeys on the Eee PC.

editions of this model have a newer BIOS? And in that case, is our
approach wrong? Should we be focusing on model at all, or on BIOS version?

I am not certain in which version of 2.6.26 this was first fixed, but can
confirm on my Eee PC model 701 that the "limited to UDMA/33 due to 40-wire
cable"
message no longer appears and the drive is now configured for UDMA/66
(hdparm -i reports *udma4

This morning my system partially froze. Before it completely froze, I
was able to see the SMB errors in the log like this:
